People think that sushi is just about raw ingredients. But that is necessarily not the case. There are various types of sushi and it is important to remember that sushi is really about cooked rice that is mixed with a vinegar mixture. One of the most popular types of sushi is the California Roll.
Despite the fact that sushi is a type of food that has originated from the Asian country of Japan, the California Roll is actually something that was created in the United States. With that, one can actually say that it is a concoction of Western and Eastern ingredients and taste.
The very first California Roll was made by a sushi chef from California. This happened during the early 1970s. This chef actually used a regular sushi roll but he added other ingredients like cucumber, fish cake, and avocado. We do know that sushi uses seaweed (or nori) as part of the whole deal but this sushi chef hid this part right inside the roll. He knew that most Americans did not like nori. From then on, the California Roll was then known as the inside out roll because you would not see the regular nori outside but it would be actually found just right inside those layers of ingredients. Though the years, the fish cake that the California chef used was then replaced by crab stick which is actually an imitation of crab meat.
When this Californian chef served his California Roll, this dish was actually met with much appreciation from diners. This kind of sushi was also a part of the whole health food movement that happened during the decade that the California Roll was created.
To make the California Roll more interesting, chefs had decorated the outer portion of the dish with various ingredients like tobiko, sesame seeds, and flying fish roe.
